The International Translation Facility can translate all kinds of terms within the display files, printer files, and RPG programs.

A term (field name, literal, heading or sub-heading) is a set of characters that describes a specific data element on reports and screens.  Part Number, which describes a specific type of number, is one example of a field name.

A field name can be an abbreviation or a stacked version.  For example, PT NO is the abbreviated format and  PT  is the stacked format for Part Number.
        NO

Stacking field names allows the most efficient use of space.  Where space permits on a screen or report, the long format will be used:  Parent Part Number.  Otherwise, the abbreviated or stacked version is used.  The field  “Parent” stacked upon Part Number will appear as:

      Parent
      Part Number

Stacking is required to permit other pertinent information to appear on the report with this field.  EFF DATE is both abbreviated and stacked to facilitate the printing of other data.  When translating stacked field names, the position of the words (upper or lower line) is usually preserved.  The position of each word can be reversed, however, if the user prefers to translate in this manner.
