Center Number Definition
The center field is used to assign accounts to specific sales locations, operational departments, or administrative areas. Grouping accounts by center facilitates preparing master file and transaction reports that help track and control profit and cost centers within a location. Though profit and loss accounts are usually assigned to centers, assets and liabilities can also be assigned to centers.
If the account/center defaults (category 107) require central recording of centers on the Reference File, a center number is defined to the system through a Center Description (category 112) record on the Reference File. This record also contains the default description for each center. If centers are available for use by all locations (global), the company and location key fields on the center description records are blank. If centers are restricted for use in either a specific company or a specific location, only the company or both the company and location key fields on the center description fields should be blank. This allows centers that are specific to a legal entity, such as a work area or a sales region, to be defined as available for use only by that legal entity. Global centers, such as office administration, can be defined to all legal entities to ensure center number consistency over all entities. These records are stored at the same level as the account/center defaults (category 107).
After all center description records are defined, Account/Center Master File records can be created. The following figure shows the entry of a global account number edit mask, a global account, an account that is specific to a location, a global center, and a center that is specific to a location.
