Using Remote Sourcing with Computer Integrated Distribution

Remote sourcing is one component of Computer Integrated Distribution (CID).  CID is the concept of MAC-PAC orders being received from a customer, sourced from a remote site, and then shipped from the remote site back to the sales office or directly to the end customer.  For more information about CID, refer to the Computer Integrated Distribution Overview Key Concept in this manual.

Remote sourcing adds to CID functionality by providing the ability for a MAC-PAC location (acting as a sales office) to source the goods of a sales order from a remote site or outside vendor.  It also supports the automatic generation of a tie between purchase orders and sales orders which allows a business location functioning as a sales office to track the processing of an outsourced order.

Note:    As with each component of CID, remote sourcing can be used with one or more of the other pieces of CID.  It can also be used as a stand-alone feature to provide a unique piece of distribution functionality.

To take full advantage of remote sourcing, it should be used in combination with Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) technology.  Using EDI, the information transferred in these transactions can be passed electronically, and therefore in a more timely basis.  For more information about EDI, see the EDI Transaction Processing Key Concept in the Electronic Data Interchange User Manual.
