Stock Location
Stock Location
A stock location (or stocking location) is a physical area in the warehouse where inventory is stored. At each location, inventory can be stored in several different balance types, which indicate if the items are to be used for manufacturing and/or distribution. Inventory balances are maintained by balance type within each location.
You can have multiple stock locations within the same warehouse, or one location per warehouse. The same item number can be stored in multiple locations. You can view inventory levels by stock location, part, or company/ warehouse.
Stock locations are defined on the Location Validation File. The balance of each item held at each location is stored on the Multiple Location File. Inventory is moved between stock locations through stock transfer transactions, through receiving inventory (from vendors or from the manufacturing floor), and through issuing inventory to production. The Transfer Control module is used to move inventory between locations at different warehouses. Whenever inventory is moved, an issuing and receiving stock location must be specified.
Note that the word "location" is also used within the financial modules to refer to the financial entity where financial data is reported. Financial locations have no relationship to stock locations.
