Product Class Code

The Product Class Code is used to group related items.  Product class codes and their associated defaults are defined on Category 426 of the Reference File.  The code is used throughout the system as follows:

The Product Class Code can be used to reduce data entry effort when defining new parts using Part Master Maintenance.  If you specify a Product Class Code, and if you specify a Stockkeeping Unit of Measure that is equal to that defined for the product class, then the values for the Purchasing and Selling Units of measure will be set according to the Product Class Code defaults.  You may override any of the defaults.

Similarly, the Product Class Code may be used to reduce data entry effort when defining Warehouse Balances in the Inventory Control module.  If you specify a Product Class Code, the values for VAT Code, Minimum Gross Margin, Maximum Gross Margin, Price Code, Discount Flag and the Pricing Unit of Measure will be set according to the defaults for the Product Class Code.

In the Order Processing module, contract prices may be defined for a Product Class.

In the Inventory Accounting module, a unique Cost of Goods Sold account is determined based on the Product Class Code defined for the item that was sold.
