Modify Error Messages

You can change the message associated with each error code.  You can also add error codes (and their corresponding messages) to the system or delete them from the system.

Changing the message allows you to customize the information the user receives (either online or on a report) when an error occurs.  Adding or deleting messages might be necessary if you modify the software.  If you delete a message whose code is used in a program, the message "MESSAGE NOT FOUND" will be displayed or printed if the corresponding error code is encountered.

1.   Create a list of all error codes to be added or deleted based on your modifications to the software.

2.   Determine any messages that need to be changed.

a.   Print or view online the Error Message File (CT120M).  Note that each record on the file has two fields:  a 7-character error code and a 55-character error message.

b.   Determine which messages you want to change.  Note that the program documentation manual for each module includes a list of the message codes used in each program within that module.

3.   Prepare source documents.

4.   Access the Error File Maintenance conversation.

a.   Select the System Support option from the MAC-PAC System Processing Menu.

b.   Select the Error File Maintenance option from the System Control File Maintenance Design Engineering Function Select screen.

5.   Modify the file.

a.   Type the number of the error message to be maintained then specify whether you want to add the error code, change the message associated with the code, or delete the code.

b.   Modify the message as appropriate.

6.   Verify that the maintenance has been performed correctly.

a.   Print and review the CT120M file.

b.   Correct any errors by repeating steps 4 and 5.
