Order Release Methods
Users specify when the warehouse shipping document (picker) is to be prepared and released. Four options are available:
· Release immediately.
· Normal order release.
· Release on promised ship date.
· Hold indefinitely.
The order release code may be any of the values defined below. Although the system provides the initial value based on a system option, an operator can change values when appropriate.

Order Release Methods: Timing Differences
If the release code is "release immediate" and there are no credit problems, the completed order is routed to the appropriate printer immediately after the operator has ended entry of the order.
If the release code is "normal release," the next file off-line processing cycle creates the picker.
If the code is "release on promised ship date," the picker is printed during the next cycle if the promised ship date (less the picking lead time) is less than or equal to the current date. Otherwise, the order is held for review in the next cycle. If the release code is "hold indefinite," the picker is not printed.
Considerations
When an order is sourced from more than one warehouse location, the same release method applies to all locations.
The sales order hold code can affect the timing of the release. If the order is held because of a credit exception and the system option is to hold such orders, the picker is not printed until the operator updates the hold code during maintenance.
If a blanket order is being entered or an order has a shipment type code of direct, then the order release code is automatically set to hold the order indefinitely; it cannot be changed by the operator. This processing is performed because a picker should not be printed for these types of orders.
If an order is being manually held and a picker should not be printed, then the operator should use an order release code of "hold indefinitely" until the decision is made to release the order from hold. This will ensure that a picker is not printed for an order that is held.
