Multiple Configured Components for the Same Item

You can define the same configuration coded component to be issued more than once in a manufacturing order. This is accomplished using a component sequence number to identify each occurrence of the component and is only valid for configuration coded items.  This sequence number has been added to several files, including the Component Requirements file, to identify each occurrence of the component.

For manufacturing orders created using the Expert Configurator, the sequence number assigned to the configuration coded component in the ‘CC’ rule is used as the component sequence number for the component requirement.  When manufacturing orders are created using the Expert Configurator, requirements for the same component/configuration code are consolidated into a single component requirement regardless of the sequence number.  Component requirements will not be combined when the configuration code does not match.  In either situation, a separate manufacturing order will be created for each ‘CC’ rule executed for the component.

For manufacturing orders created using Resource Planning or Manufacturing Order Maintenance where the component requirements are generated from the Product Structure, the product structure sequence number is used as the component sequence number for configuration coded items.

To add additional components to manufacturing orders through MO Maintenance, the user must enter the component sequence number for any configuration coded component.  Non-configuration coded components are always assigned a sequence number of 0 since these components may only be issued once per manufacturing order.

In the following example, the end-item, a cabinet, has three equal drawers (part number is DRAWER-01) with the only difference among the drawers are the lock, the handle, and the position within the cabinet.  The cabinet will have a drawer on the left, middle, and right.  As long as the sequence number is different, a different configuration code can be used to represent key differences between the drawers, instead of defining separate part numbers on the system for the unique configuration options.
