Configured Component Processing

Because our configured desk also contains a configured component (the drawers), we must define a Configured Component Rule to initiate processing of the rules associated with the drawer.  When a Configured Component Rule is encountered, the configuration process for the component part specified in the rule begins.  When the sales order entry and pricing configuration rules for the component are completed, processing returns to the rule immediately following the Configured Component Rule.

In our example, the sales order entry and pricing configuration rules for the drawers (the lower-level component) are completed before we complete configuration of the desk (the upper-level component).  We also wanted all of the options for the desk to be entered and validated before the drawers were selected.  In this way, we could ensure that the drawer options would be compatible with the desk options.  To do this, we defined the Configured Component Rule for the drawers with a rule number which would cause it to be processed after all of the Screen Generation and Validation rules for the desk.  See the figure below for an illustration of the Configured Component Rule.  Also, note that before the part number in the Sales Order Rule Maintenance Screen Validation Detail Screen in the Validation Configured Screens through the Use of Tables section, there is a field for a sequence number.  This field is used to state the sequence in which the part is to be used.  In some manufacturing environments, it is necessary to use a variation of the same part/component multiple times for a parent item.  The sequence number allows the user to specify which variation is to be used.

When all options for the desk are entered and validated, the Configured Component Rule will pass processing control to the sales order entry and pricing rules for the drawers.  When the drawer options are entered and validated, and the pricing rules are completed, processing control is returned to the rule immediately following the Configured Component Rule.
